The photographic image carries with it an assumption of Truth in the sense that the camera records that which is presumed to actually be present in the frame. On its arrival, photography was thought of as a way to document that which is, that which exists. It brought remote places to people that had neither the means or desire to travel to isolated landscapes for a few oohs and aahs. The photograph is used to convict accused persons when used as evidence in a criminal trial because the photographic image carries the presumption of Truth and accuracy. Photographic records of individuals, families, and groups of all sorts document the lives of those who have lived or are currently living.
