Going Green

Trees No. 4 ~ Summer 2009

Trees No. 4 ~ Summer 2009

Trees No. 4 ~ Summer 2009

This is the third in a series of seasonal images. The idea was to capture and document the same place in three different aspects in order to demonstrate change over time. One image, made in the fall, shows the bare branches of the trees, almost skeletal in appearance. Another portrays the same trees after a significant snow while this image was captured in mid-summer when the trees are in full bloom.

Each image stands alone yet together they tell a story. Nothing remains forever, nothing stays the same. What appears permanent is elusive, out of reach, impermanent. Existence depends on the infinitely small, immeasurable moment for being but remains only as a trace of memory, a recall of that which never was.

The experienced life, the lived experience, is sandwiched between two unresponsive infinities. It is only in the lived experience that one is response-able; only in the lived experience does one have a choice to shake off the chains of ego or engage in a life of service. That is the choice we all face, to be self absorbed or to be able to respond to the needs of others without thought of self.

By photographing a series of images of the same object I am reminded of how brief the moment is and how fragile that which we call permanent may really be.
