The Sidney Harbor Bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. Landmarks serve to mark the memory of places seen even prior to one’s visiting such a place. Prior to my first assignment that brought me to Sydney, I knew of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, I had a clear image of the bridge in my mind’s eye. I was privy to pictures of the bridge, both still images and motion picture images. I knew its shape, its general outline but I was caught off guard by its size. When I first saw the bridge I was overcome by its dimensions. Huge, I thought, how the heck will I be able to photograph this place. Then it happened. Walking from my hotel on the Rocks to the Sydney Opera House the early evening of my arrival, I turned around to look at where I came from and there it was. I made this image just as the sun was setting.
